Community Informatics as a Pathway to Social Change
Nancy D. Campbell and Virginia Eubanks, Department of Science and Technology Studies

Community informatics is a sustainable approach to community enrichment that integrates participatory design of information technology resources, popular education, and asset-based development to enhance citizen empowerment and quality of life. The RPI COPC matches teams of public service interns with community partners like the YWCA of Troy-Cohoes to create focused, long-term informatics projects resulting in active research, stronger relationships between university and local organizations, and more vibrant communities. The goal of these projects is to facilitate local expertise and gather existing resources to increase community engagement and empower citizens to make social change. The community informatics group seeks to build an "engaged university" by refocusing RPI's Public Service Internship program around principles of serviceand theory/practice learning and by developing collaborative projects like Women at the YWCA Making Social Movement (WYMSM) with our community partners.
